The City of Brentwood has certain codes (laws) that can help keep your neighborhood both safe and attractive. Please see our Common Concerns flyer for more information.

Basketball Hoops

Basketball hoops are prohibited on any public sidewalk or street. For more information, please see the Municipal Code section 8.00.030 (B2).

Garbage/Recycle Container Storage

Garbage and recycling containers must be screened from public view (i.e. behind a fence or inside of the garage). Each container shall be placed on the street for collection by five a.m. of collection day (and no earlier than the preceding evening), and shall be removed by ten p.m. of collection day. Inoperative Vehicles

Vehicles can be parked in the driveway, but must be in running condition. If they are inoperative, you may be asked to remove them or store them inside the garage, please see Municipal Code section 10.20.160. The City of Brentwood offers a free towing service for vehicles that residents wish to relinquish, a pink slip is required. For more information, please see the Municipal Code sections 8.00.030 (A3) and 10.20.020.

Recreational Vehicles, Boat & Trailer Storage

Recreational vehicles, boats and trailers must be stored behind a solid 6 foot fence in the side or rear yard to screen them from public view. For more information, please see the Municipal Code section 17.620.016.

Building Permits

Building permits are required for accessory structures, such as patio covers and arbors. A permit is required prior to any building or structure being repaired, altered, converted, or demolished. Signs

A sign permit is required for all permanent signage, prior to installation. Temporary banners require a banner sign permit. Outdoor merchandise displays requires a temporary use permit. Contact the Planning Division at (925) 516-5405.

Property Maintenance

Front yard landscaping maintenance is required (i.e. removal of overgrown or dead vegetation and weeds). For more information, please see the Municipal Code section 8.36.

Contact the Police Department at (925) 809-7911.

Home Operated Business

You may operate certain types of businesses out of your home. However, you must secure a home occupation permit from the Planning Division to ensure your business is not in violation of zoning requirements and does not adversely impact your neighborhood (i.e. no employee may report to the home and no exterior signage may be displayed). Contact Finance at (925) 516-5480 to obtain a business tax certificate. For more information, please see the Municipal Code sections 17.840 and 5.04.020.
