The Public Works Department is dedicated to fostering a strong connection with the community through a variety of outreach programs designed to promote awareness and understanding of public works operations. We believe that education at the elementary school level can have a lasting impact on the community's future. When children understand the Public Works Department's role in maintaining infrastructure such as roads, water systems, solid waste management, and wastewater treatment, they gain insight into how these services contribute to their safety and health. Early awareness and responsibilities help build a knowledgeable foundation and instill environmental responsibility that children can pass on to their families.
National Public Works Week (NPWW) recognizes the professionals who manage and maintain the City's infrastructure and services. The City of Brentwood celebrates NPWW by hosting a public Open House at its Corporation Yard. Held annually for over 10 years, this event features a recycling show, backhoe competitions, demonstrations from the sign shop, water hydrants, and various equipment including garbage trucks, sweepers, and camera trucks. Additionally, there are informational displays about water conservation, water quality, and more. The City collaborates with the Brentwood Union School District to provide approximately 1,200 third graders, chaperones, and school staff an opportunity to participate and learn more about their community and its operations.
