Why Volunteer at a Law Enforcement Agency? - Simple - We Need You!
Throughout the years, the demands on state and local law enforcement continue to increase. As a result, the already limited resources of these agencies are being stretched further than ever, at a time when communities need every available officer out on the beat.
In many jurisdictions around the country, volunteers have offered their time and skills to law enforcement agencies. These citizen volunteers help supplement and support officers and civilian personnel by allowing them to concentrate on their primary duties.
The VIPS (Volunteers in Police Services) program previously known as BACUP (Brentwood Active Citizens in Uniformed Patrol) was established in 1995 at the Brentwood Police Department. VIPS is a group of volunteers who assist the police department in many of its everyday functions. We do our best to match the skills of the volunteer with the needs of the department. Volunteer roles may include performing clerical tasks, serving as an extra set of "eyes and ears," assisting with search and rescue activities, photocopying, answering phones, D.U.I. checkpoints, vehicle abatement, special events in the city, deployment of the traffic speed radar trailer, and vehicle maintenance.
The VIPS program consists of approximately twenty members on an average.
