The City's Wastewater Treatment Plant is not designed to treat certain materials that may enter the sewer system, such as hazardous chemicals and metals. Some of these materials may pass through or interfere with the wastewater treatment process. The Environmental Compliance Division is responsible for preventing these pollutants from entering our sewer system with the goal of protecting our environment. We achieve this through routine monitoring, inspections, and educational outreach.
New businesses are asked to fill out an Industrial Wastewater Survey to determine whether their business requires environmental compliance review. The City has implemented several programs to help specific businesses maintain compliance with wastewater discharge limits.
Environmental Compliance staff are also responsible for performing stormwater inspections under the City's Clean Water Program (Stormwater Management).
